Aerial photography in connection with the surveying process is a very effective way of getting a large-scale project off the ground. Photo identifiable control points and or painted targets are measured by the surveyor and related to the photograph to bring it down to a ground coordinate system.

Using this process for topography is not as accurate as actually measuring on the ground but is accurate enough for a lot of applications such as concept planning and mapping.
